Embankments

Reinforcement for embankment bases on soft subsoil is used to increase the safety against underground failure and to reduce the differential settlement of the underground. Embankments are typically constructed with edge slopes of 1:2 to 1:3. Edge slopes may be steepened by using soil reinforcement .

Due to the horizontal earth pressure in the embankment, shear stress will be mobilized between the embankment and the underground.

Reinforced embankments may be constructed using different kinds of fill materials and in combination with other stabilizing techniques. Geosynthetic reinforcement is frequently used for piled embankments on soft subsoil. The piles may be wooden, steel or concrete pre-made piles or mixed-in-place columns (lime-cement columns). The reinforcement function in this application is to transfer the vertical loads from the embankment to the piles and to oppose the lateral forces from lateral earth pressure in the fill.
